Among the most distinctive birds were the secretary birds, which look a lot like chickens stalking around, but which are eagles. There were a couple of different stories about how they got their monicker. One suggested that the feathers sticking out of their heads looked like pens sticking out from behind one's ear. I don't think we ever say any of them flying.
