Howard P Kuykendall met the Haydock brothers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey
while conducting business in Livingston County KY, just across the Cumberland River
from his home in what later became Marshall Co KY.  He also met their sister, Mary,
and fell in love.  But convincing Mary to join him in that rough frontier country was
not an easy matter, as she was accustomed to life in the eastern cities.  However an
agreement was reached, and Howard travelled to Rahway NJ, loaded his flatboat with
Mary's various belongings, made the hazardous journey down the rivers from New
Jersey to Kentucky, and deposited the belongings and Mary in the home he had
built to her specifications.  She had insisted on "tongue and groove" flooring (when dirt
floors were not unusual in that age).  Mary also had her piano (or what we would now
call a pinafore) and other furnishings that were not common for the time and place.
It must have been well worth Howard's efforts, as he and Mary raised three children
and remained happily married for 40 years, until death did them part !!
