The area known as the Jackson Purchase in Kentucky was officially acquired by the United

States govenment from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818.  Josiah Kuykendall, along with his sons,

was quick to acquire land in this new area that later became Calloway and Marshall Counties.

Josiah had moved from Tennessee to Logan Co KY (the area later cut into Butler County) at the

beginning of the 19th century with his father, Matthew Kuykendall, his brothers, and the

Howard and Hardin families who had traditionally travelled together.  They were poised on the

frontier next to the Purchase and anxious for additonal lands.  Records indicate that Josiah

secured more than 800 acres of land, and his descendants have continued to live in this area

and in some cases on this land, for almost 200 years (1818 - 2011).
