3. The Court Order Book for Caroline Co., VA 1740-1746, has an entry for the Court held on 12 March 1741/42 where on the Petition of Henry West and others, it was ordered that Thomas Maddison, Henry Harris and Benjamin Wood view and lay off the most convenient way for a road from the place where the new church is to be erected into the road by Richard Hewlett's. On the same date, Anthony Samuel was appointed surveyor of the new road from the shop to Sutton's Ford, and John Madison, Thomas Madison, John Ellis, Augustine Ellis, James Samuel, George Chapman, Thomas Walker, John Hubbard, Anne Walker, John Shirley, William Emerson, John Jarrell, Christopher Eccoff, Robert Standfeild, Henry Harris, George Martin, James Coleman, Joseph Stevens and Robert Johnson with their people assist the surveyor in clearing the road and keeping the same in repair. It is likely that these two orders related to the same road. This is the first entry of the name John Madison in the Caroline Co., VA, Court Order Book. This is consistent with "J. Madison", son of Thomas Madison, born October 26, 1719, coming of age and beginning to appear in the Caroline Co., Court Order Book. There was no other Madison known to have been living in Caroline Co., VA, who was old enough to be the father of this John Madison who was ordered to keep the road in repair on 12 March 1741/42. Therefore, it seems likely that "J. Madison" child of Thomas Madison, born on October 26, 1719, was a male named John Madison.
