Adam Kimberling Immigration and Migration to Mason County, West Virginia

Unsourced note saying that Kimberlings arrived in America on the Osgood in 1750, and relating the story of the 1803 migration of Adam's family from southwestern Virginia to 13 Mile Creek, in Mason County.

This note was sourced to a RootsWeb site that no longer exists; I don't know who wrote it, but it's my source for 7-year-old Adam Kimberling's immigration from Germany with his parents (Fredrich Kimberling and step-mother Maria Schmaltzhoff) on the Osgood in 1750. The "Kummerlin" family was from Wuerttenberg, Germany. The Osgood sailed from Rotterdam, Holland to Philadelphia. An excellent account of that voyage can be found at susanleachsnyder.com/Genealogy/TheOsgoodShip1750.html

JOHANNES ADAM (Kummerlin) WAS BORN 7 JULY, 1743 IN GERMANY. HE CAME TO AMERICA WITH HIS PARENTS (STEP-MOTHER) ON THE OSGOOD IN 1750. AROUND 1770 (in Augusta County, VA) HE MARRIED NANCY DAVIS, THE DAUGHTER OF PATRICK DAVIS. ABOUT 1793 ADAM AND HIS SON, JACOB, PURCHASED SOME LAND ON THE CEDAR CREEK, A TRIBUTARY OF THE JACKSON RIVER AND ABOUT 20 MILES UPSTREAM FROM COVINGTON, VA. THIS IS SITUATED IN PRESENT BATH CO.,VA (near Hot Springs, VA).

IN 1803 ADAM AND NANCY AND THEIR CHILDREN MOVED TO MASON CO., THE KIMBERLINGS TRAVELED FROM COVINGTON, VA. TO CHARLESTON, VA IN A TWO-WHEELED OX CART ON THE ARMY POST ROAD. FROM THE FALLS BELOW CHARLESTON, THEY FLOATED DOWN THE KANAWHA RIVER ON A RAFT TO GRIMM'S LANDING. AFTER MAKING A SLED FROM THE RAFT, THEY HITCHED UP THE OXEN, WENT OVER TWO HILLS AND SETTLED ON THIRTEENMILE CREEK.

Thirteenmile Creek runs roughly northward and parallel to the Kanawha River, and flows into the Kanawha at the town of Leon, in Mason County, West Virginia. Adam had migrated to Southwest Virgina with his parents. His father, Jacob Freidrich Kummerlin, was killed by Native Americans in 1763, in what is now Bland County, Virginia, not far from the property that Adam bought 30 years later.
