Adam Kimberling notes

Notes on Adam (Joh) Kimberling, and quoting from several sources. Uploaded to Ancestry by Aleta Bowman

I have seen the name spelled as Kimberling, Kimberland and Kimberlin. In Germany was Kummerlin.

Source: "Kimberling Kin from East to West 1750 to 1983." I found this book in the Family History Library in SLC.

Adam Kimberling was born about 1750. It is very possible that both of his parents were born in Germany and he could have been born there also. Adam probably lived the greater portion of his life in Augusta County and Botetourt County, Virginia. Around 1770 he married Nancy Davis, daughter of Patrick Davis. The German language was spoken in the home and English, undoubtly, was the second language. The only record regarding the Revolution is that Adam was in Captain John Ballar's District on the Jackson River south of the Botetourt Line. About 1793 Adam and his son, Jacob, purchased some land on the Cedar Creek, a tributary of the Jackson River and about 20 miles upstream from Covington, VA. This is situated in present Bath County, VA. Since there was an established post road from Richmond, VA to Point Pleasant, W. VA, it may be assumed that this is the way they traveled by wagon to Charleston, for the post road ran through Covington. Legend tells us that they floated on the river on a flatboat, landing at Grimms Landing, where they made a sled from the flatboat. They pulled the sled over two hills and settled on Thirteen Mile Creek. Adam died before March, 1805, for an inventory of his property is in the Mason County Will Book. Nancy died after 1810, for she is listed on the 1810 Mason County Census. Possible children:

  • James Kimberling: born 1773
  • Mary Magdalene Kimberling: born Dec. 13, 1775, died in 1841
  • Jacob Kimberling: born 1778, died May 4, 1855
  • Adam Kimberling, Jr.: born 1785
  • Joseph Kimberling: born 1786-90, died April 22, 1848
  • Nathaniel Kimberling: born Sept. 2, 1789, died 1877
  • Nancy Kimberling: born 1791
  • Elizabeth (Becky) Kimberling: born 1793
  • Elijah Kimberling
  • William Kimberling
  • Ann Kimberling

We think that Adam was buried in the Kimberling cemetery. There is a stone for Nancy Davis Kimberling there.

Samuel Blackburn, attorney for Thomas Oliver June 1800 court with this note by Oliver: "The above list of balances I have found in the books of John Oliver, deceased, but from the manner in which he conducted his business I am afraid that a large proportion of them have been paid and of course there are bad debts. To make the best of them I have ordered suits indiscriminately therefore no more than comes to my hands can be considered as assets."
