Madison Richmond Death Certificate
Madison Richmond Death Certificate
A Jun 19, 1913 article in the Kansas City Gazette Globe, titled "Abstinence Causes Death" says that Madison Love Richmond promised his wife he would never drink again, and that she found him dead in bed three days later. A physician was quoted saying that taking away the stimulant of alcohol probably weakened his heart. But his death certificate says he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage from a fractured skill (and that he was "caught in machine". The real story - we assume - was published in the newspaper 2 days later. It seems that he showed up at a card game drunk, took a bottle and started drinking again. He reported refused to give up the bottle and pulled a knife on his son-in-law who knocked him on the head. Oops.

  • Most searches look for the search string in the Title, Description, and Body Text fields.
In a sense, all three fields are descriptions of a media item.
    1. Title is the shortest, and
    2. Description is usually no more than a few lines long.
    3. Body Text can supply additional information about the media item, and can have rich formatting (i.e. headings, paragraphs, bold text, colors, etc.).
  • If a search string begins with 'owner:', then this program searches for the rest of the search string in the Media Item's Owner field.
For example, a search string of 'owner:Robinson' would find all media items for which 'Robinson' occurs in the owner field.

Which database fields are searched
The media items that are attached to people and places in this database are organized into 'Collections' (aka 'Media types'). This is a logical organization based on the information in the file, not a physical organization based on the file type, e.g. images, PDF files, Word documents, or HTML documents.
Yes, HTML documents (typically containing stories or research notes) that are not a fundamental part of the TNG application can be considered to be 'media items', and can be attached to people and places just like images and other files.

The most common media collections in TNG application are:

  • Photos of people and places. Almost all photos would be be in .jpg files, though other file types such as .png or .gif may be used.
  • Documents - This collection typically contains formal documents such as birth, death, and marriages licenses. The files in this collection may be scanned images, or perhaps PDF, HTML, or Microsoft Word files that (may) contain scanned images and that (probably) contain some annotation of those images.
  • Histories - Stories about a person or family, or about a particular place and time. Just as with documents, these files may be scanned images, or PDF, HTML, or Word (etc.) documents. Note that there is some natural ambiguity in the distinction between Documents and Histories. For instance, a Will might be considered either a Document or a History. (One file can't be both).
  • Headstones - These are mostly likely to be photographs. Headstone photographs are typically kept into a different collection from Photos because TNG has features that associate Headstone photos with cemeteries and burial plots.

Other fairly widely-used media collections in TNG web sites include

  • Recordings and Videos - These are probably self-explanatory.
  • Special cases of Documents such as Censuses, Birth Records, Marriage Records, Death Records, Military, and the like.
