This Samuel is the son of James H. McCutcheon and Elizabeth (Hunter). He was born 06 June 1795 in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY, died 26 Apr 1867, Scottsville, Floyd Co., IN.  He married 06 Apr 1824, in Spencer Co., KY to Sarah (Reasor), born 13 Nov 1805, Little Mount, Spencer Co., KY, died 20 May 1854, Scottsville, Floyd Co., IN. Sarah was a dau of Michael and Anna (Herbert) Reasor of Spencer Co., KY.

This Samuel has erroneously been given credit for a marriage to Nancy Wells, and in another message as having married later to two other women. After Sarah's death, he never married again.

James H. McCutcheon (his father) was born in Augusta Co., VA, bet. 1760/1765, married in Augusta Co. about 1788, to Elizabeth (Hunter). Their first four children were born in VA. They removed to Kentucky about 1796 where the rest of their children were born. They moved again, evidently about 1810 or 1811, settling in the Wabash River area of IN.

It is known that James fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe. By 1815 he had lost six of his horses, stolen by Indians, and the family was constantly harassed by Indians. James felt that his family was in danger of being massacred so the family packed up and left, intending to return to Kentucky (or Virginia). They stopped for a visit in Floyd Co., IN, where his brother William had settled in 1806. James liked the area and remained there. A few years later they were joined by another brother, Samuel Sanford McCutcheon, who
had married a cousin, Frances (McCutcheon).

It has been published in the "History of Ohio Falls Counties" that William came to Floyd Co. in 1806 with his sons, Samuel and James.  (Could this "James" have been Bailey McCutcheon who settled in Greene Co., IN?) I think this is probably the Samuel who married Nancy Wells in 1817, and that it is about for this part of the McCutcheon family be recognized.

By the time the census showed names for all individuals in a family, Floyd Co., was virtually flooded by Samuel McCutcheons, and none of them were Samuel who married Nancy. What happened to them? By 1850 James H. McCutcheon had died (02 Nov 1822, at Greenville, Floyd Co.).  His son Samuel was living next door to his uncle Samuel Sanford McCutcheon, his wife Frances, and their son, Samuel Jr., his wife Melinda (Scott) and their children. On the other side of Samuel was another son of Samuel Sanford, William, who had married America (Scott).

The family of Samuel and Sarah have been memoralized in the Memories of Wesley Scott, but somewhat erroneously. This is the census records they can be foumd in:
