Decatur County Journal
April 9, l89l

JOSIAH MCCUTCHAN was born in Floyd County, Indiana, October 27, l833,
and died at his home in Decatur County, Iowa, April 3, l89l, aged 57
years, 5 months and 6 days.

BRO. MCCUTCHAN joined the Christian Church at the early age of seventeen
in Floyd County, Indiana. After his removal to Iowa he joined the Eden
Prairie Church and was ordained Elder, which position he faithfully
filled until released by his Master. His place will never be filled on
earth. He has taken his abode in the mansions of the blessed, there to
wait the welcome of his loved ones home.

He was married to ELIZABETH A. NELSON at the home of her father,
ARBUCKLE NELSON, in Wayne County, Iowa, March l7, l859, and removed to
Decatur County in l866. Ten children came to bless their home. Three
have preceded their father to the spirit land. The others, MRS. CLARA
LEONARD, MRS. MARY HAZLET, JAMES MCCUTCHAN, MRS. ELLA HINDS, FANNIE,
DAVID and SANFORD, live at or hear home. His brother, D.W. MCCUTCHAN,
from Mitchell County, Kansas, two of his wife's brothers, MARSHAL and
FRENCH NELSON, of Wayne County, and eight grand children were present
and did all loving hands could do to relieve and console him.

He passed away without a struggle and we thought, as we beheld the calm
peaceful features: "What a nobleman! He has fought a good fight and
finished his work. Although he is dead he still liveth". He was a kind
and affectionate father, a loving and dutiful husband, a good citizen
and friend. The funeral services were conducted by BRO. JONES, of Leon,
at the residence on Saturday. After reading the scripture lesson from l
Cor. v., l-9, singing and prayer, the Brother spoke very feelingly from
PH. iii, 20-2l. The text had been selected by his dear brother, D.W.
MCCUTCHAN, knowing how aptly it applied to his brother's life.

The remains were then followed to the Chastain cemetery by a large
concourse of relatives and sympathizing friends, where they were laid to
wait the resurrection morn. The bereaved have the sympathy of a large
circle of friends.
