Martha L was kind of a black sheep in the family.  When my grandmother, Jewel, was born, she was only 3 pounds, premature.  It was cold then and Martha L did not think she would survive, and said to let her die.  My great grandmother Martha A was the midwife at the birth.  She said she would take care of Jewel, and so put her in a cotton lined shoebox on the door of the oven to keep her warm, and fed her with an eyedropper.  Later, Martha L abandoned Jewel and Martha A raised her.  That is why I have stories of Jewel helping Martha A on her midwife/doctoring rounds.  My grandmother, Jewel, told me that story many times.  -- RichardKCollins
