A Short history of my wife and hir People by John Blackburn Moyers

My wife's maiden name was Mary Snoddy, eldest daughter of Thomas Snoddy an Esq. of Jefferson Co. Tenn. he was born in Virginia, and his fathers name was John. Thomas Snoddy Esq, was a man of singular qualities of mind, of extensive reading & information both of church, & state, yet was inclined to keep every thing to himself, he knew,[ except when strongly solicited by some friend.

and is exceedingly tanacious of his honor & good name.

His first wifes name was Hannah Davis of Washington Co. Virginia by her he had 8 children, Jannis, Mary, Waucy, Betsey, John,Saml, Robert, & Hannah.

His first wife died in child bed with Hannah, and he married Jane Blackburn daughter of John Blackburn Esq. of Jefferson Co. my mothers sister.

By her he had five children [viz] Edward, Thomas, Cary, Jane & Margaret. Thos was a youth of great promise & died at Marysville, where he had well nigh completed an education for the Ministry, of a hemorage of the blood from the lungs. Thomas Snoddy Esq. once made a tour to Missouri about the year 1816, and was absent between 3 & 4 years from his family, & the cause of this, he would never explain, to the date of his death. His oldest son Jas, followed him, & married in that state, had some children by his wife, finely became deranged in mind, wandered about several years, came back to his fathers & died there.

My wifes father had several brothers and sisters whose names were, John, Saml, Cary, Robert, William, Jane, Mary, & Elizabeth. The greater part of all these & himself died with what I would call Scrofulous Cancer. Tho, most of them lived to advanced age. Thomas Snoddy Esq. was a rigid professor of Religion of the New Presbyterians.

My wife Mary, when young was exceedingly lively, of courteous address, of portly make, dark hair, fair skin blue eyes. of industrious habits & made ...
