This page has two search mechanisms:
- A simple keyword search, which will find all places that contain the string you enter.
It ignores letter case.
Note that if you search for "Kansas", you'll get every place in Kansas, plus Kansas City, Missouri and all places in Arkansas.
To focus on the state of Kansas, you could search for ", Kansas".
- A 'Drill-Down' search that utilizes the hierarchical nature of placenames and
requires you to do the searching as you drill down through the
country, state, county, and city (etc.).
It will focus on places that are within the places you have selected as you drill-down,
and thus avoids some of the problems with the keyword search.
But the drill-drown search has its own idiosyncrasies - what can I say - nothing is perfect.
In the drill-down search, you'll see places listed three ways:
- Calhoun County, Texas, USA
- The spyglass tell you that there are events in the specific placename
"Calhoun County, Texas, USA".
You can see those events if you click on the spyglass.
- Butler County, Ohio, USA(3)
- Here, the absence of a spyglass tells you that there are no events at the specific placename "Butler County, Ohio, USA".
- The number in parentheses tells you that there are events in 13 places
within Butler County. (Not 13 events, not necessarily 13 towns,
but rather 13 places,
some of which may be cemeteries that are in the county but not a town,
and some of which may be cemeteries inside towns.)
- "Butler County" is a hyperlink that takes you to a list of places that are inside Butler County, at the next structural level.
That is, you'll get towns such as
"High Branch, Calhoun County…", and you'll get cemeteries out in the county, such as
"Bethel Cemetery, Caloun County…".
But you'll have to drill down to "Greenfield, Calhoun County…" before you can see
"Hillcrest Cemetery, Greenfield, Calhoun County…".
- Texas, USA(647)
- As you might surmise from the previous two points,
- The spyglass tells you that there are events that are at the place "Texas, USA", and
- The number in parentheses (along with the hyperlink) tells you that there are 647 places within Texas,
and thus many more than 647 events.

Also, it is important to be aware that this application des not use an online "Placename Authority"
such as the one used by Google Maps, and thus it don't know about places for which this site has no data.
For instance, if no one in on this website happens to have had any life events in
or within), Jackson County, Iowa nor in, say, Mumbai, India,
then those places simply do not exist as far as this website is concerned.
