My grandfather, Clarence Richmond, kept a diary during his time in the U.S. Marines during World War 1 - including his time on the battlefront. He then expanded it into a memoir that tells quite a remarkable story, and has several poignant passages. In 1997, I published it online at http://www.robinrichmond.com/wardiary/

He arrived at the front toward the end of the epic Battle of Belleau Wood, earned the Distinguished Service Cross and other medals at the Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge, and participated in the decisive Meuse-Argonne offensive, which culminated a brutal crossing of the Meuse River on the last night of the war.

His diary and other artifacts of his time in the war are on display at the Museum of Five Points in Cleveland, Tennessee.

The passage from my grandfather's memoir that is, to me, the most poignant and memorable is about a battle on November10, 1918 - the last night of World War 1 - when the 5th Marines were asked to take the East bank of the Meuse River under very heavy fire from the Germans stationed on the hills above the river. (See www.robinrichmond.com/wardiary/diary20.htm ) He reveals the desperation and carnage of the night without hyperbole, and waxes eloquently on the controversy of requiring soldiers to engage in a difficult battle even after the cease-fire was negotiated, but before it went into effect. He also noted dryly that, as he prepared for that battle, "for the millionth time, I agreed with Gen. Sherman about war".

That passage is especially memorable because, in 2012, I went on a remarkable World War 1 - themed tour of Belgium and France that featured the exploits of the U.S. Marines. When I signed up for the tour, I learned that the guide was Mike Hanlon, a WW1 historian who had contacted me at least ten years previously when he first found my grandfather's memoir online. It turned out that he was using the memoir as a primary source for his detailed itinerary. Visiting the Nov 10 crossing site was a key stop on the tour - though none of us (Mike included) knew exactly how to reach the site by road. When we arrived in the vicinity of the crossing, our 16-passenger bus bounced through farm fields and a forest as we search for the crossing site. When we finally saw the river, we got out of the bus for a better look, and I read aloud the words that my grandfather had written about that battle. As we got back on the bus, Mike told me "When I planned this trip, I intended for someone to read that passage to the group, but I had no idea whatsoever that it might be read by Clarence Richmond's grandson."

My grandmother was very dear to me. I spent several weeks in several summers with my Richmond grandparents in Cleveland, Tennessee. They knew of my love for baseball, and enrolled me in little league at least a couple of times. We'd run up into the Smoky Mountains occasionally, or go down to Rock City or up to Aunt Mattie's home. They took me to a family reunion in Spencer at least once. Granddad also would take me fishing on Tennessee River lakes.

I remember Grandmother as nurturing, and I remember her smile - and I long for the taste of her dill seed bread. She taught grade school, and I learned about the Trail of Tears and other stories of American history from her. In later years, she was an avid bird-watcher and was able to attract many birds to her garden window.

I suppose that her nurturing attitude toward me is sadly ironic, considering that, as a mother, she was so dedicated to the overwhelming care of her physically and mentally disabled son Joe Robin (my namesake, who died at 17) that she was not particularly nurturing to my father and his sisters when they were young.

She carried pain from her younger years throughout her life. She was not able to talk about Joe Robin; I never learned where his name came from. She never got over her anger toward the girl who tripped her 14-year-old sister Clemma, causing a fall from which she died with a ruptured spleen. Nor could she let go of her bitterness toward her step-mother, who was disliked (to put it mildly) by all of her siblings, and who repeatedly threatened to send Edith to an orphan home.

Edith Kuykendall Hutcheson married Clarence L. Richmond on July 23, 1923. They had four children. They lived in Cleveland, Tennessee where Clarence had a successful insurance agency. Since Edith was the youngest daughter, she had the youngest husband. Her sisters were all widows. In their retirement years Clarence and Edith would take Mattie, Fannie and Mary on long trips through the west and other parts of the country. They were all big talkers and all would try to tell you about the trips at the same time.

Leander Travis Hutcheson Sr. married Alma Freiley in 1910. None of his children approved, or got along well with her - to say the least. My (Robin's) Grandmother, Edith, was 11 at the time, and she told us that her stepmother regularly threatened to send her away to an orphanage. At age 98, Edith still resented her step mother bitterly.

James Murphy (husband of L.T.'s granddaughter Elizabeth Swallows) reports:
None of Leander Travis Sr.'s children should have married "Miss" Alma and as soon as they could they went on their own. After Grandpa died Jan. 16, 1934 she never shared anything from the home with any child. There was one exception: "Miss Alma" after some time married a Mr. Howard and lived on the Sparta-Cookeville highway and then one day in the 1950's Mattie Hutcheson Swallows stopped and asked her to give the family Bible with all the family records to her. She agreed to do so. It was rebound and the broken sheets were laminated.

Judge Trewhitt was a civic leader in Bradley County. In 1861, though he was in his 60's, he was arrested and imprisioned by the Confederacy without trial after Union sympathizers burned several bridges in East Tennessee. Despite numerous appeals for his release and testimony that he actively discouraged participation in the rebellion againts the Confederacy, he was not released, and he died in prison camp in Mobile, Alabama. Judge Trewhitt's parentage is not documented, and various unsourced online trees differ about who his parents were.

The majority of Ancestry.com trees that include him say that his parents were James Madison Tewhitt and Elizabeth Mumford, and some list his grandparents as Levi Trewhitt (born 1725 in NC) and Mary West. There is a marriage record for Levi Trewhitt(1725) and Mary West, but I cannot find any contemporaneous documentation of James Madison Trewhitt or Elizabeth Mumford. A Jesse Mumford (age 80) was living with 63-year-old Levi Trewhitt and family in 1860.

Other trees and GRid=39690158 say that Judge Trewhitt was the son of Levi Truitt and Susanna Morgan. There is some weak documentation of both Levi Truitt and Susanna Morgan, primarily through generic marriage record sources (e.g. "International Marriage Records"), but only ambiguous information about their birth places. (See their profiles, both linked from this one)

FWIW, the online trees that report Judge Trewhitt's father to be James Madison Trewitt tend to list a brother named Jesse Trewhitt, a physician, who also lived in Morgan Co, TN, and migrated to Arkansas. (See his profile). On the other hand, the online trees that report Judge Trewitt's father to be Levi Truitt tend not to list Jesse Trewhitt as a brother, but do tend to list a brother named James Alford Truitt, who fought in the Texas War of Independence, and served as a justice of the peace and state legislator in Texas for many years.

There is a Warren's Chapel Nazarene Church in Franklin Co, TN, where the federal census places Jesse in 1920. Blackburn Fork is a state scenic river in Putnam County, but was in Jackson County in 1826 when Jesse purchased land in Jackson County.

Christian is named in his father's will and is also listed in the "Tenth Legion Thithables for Rockingham Cty, Virginia". There is a marriage bond signed by his father for Christian and Barbara dated 1787. In the book, "VA Valley Records" he is listed in the 1788 Militia vouchers. The 1810 census for Tennessee and a large portion of the 1820 were destroyed except those for Rutherford Cty and Chrisitian was in Washington Cty, Tennessee. he is listed in the tax records for Tennessee in 1814/1819. Christian and his son Christian are both listed under their respective wills for Washington Cty, Tennessee. His will was written 2/10/1841 and probated 4/1841. He mentions his son-in-law George hinkle and his daughters Hannah Wattenbarger and daughter Elizabeth Hinkle and daughter Christiana Barger and son Christian Zetty, Jr.

The surname Wuertemberger is a "toponym". It was derived from his family's homeland in the duchy of Württemberg, which was affiliated with the Holy Roman Empire, but was (like nearby states) fought over continually in the early- and mid-1700's. It is now part of the German state Baden-Württemberg, whose capital is Stuttgart. Baden-Württemberg is the most southwesterly German state, bordering Switzerland and France (Alsace). I can't really say that Adam (as he was known, at least in America) was born in Württemberg, but his family certainly came from there.

His FindAGrave page says that Adam emigrated from Ilbesheim, a town in the Rhemish Palitanate, a duchy just northwest of Württemberg, but, again, I can't say when or even whether he moved there from Württemberg. The Palitanate is now part of the German state Rhineland-Palatinate, which borders Luxembourg and Belgium on the west.

Johann Adam was part of the mass immigration from southwest Germany in the mid-1700s that was driven by the devastation caused by War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Year's War. These immigrants are collectively known as German Palatines, though the Rhenish Palatinate was only one of several historical districts affected.

The name Wuertemberger was spelled many different ways in records that have been found, and about a generation later, had been anglicized to Wattenbarger.

Joseph Hull was a distinctly outspoken and controversial minister of the Church of England who was fired from at least six congregations. He began preaching in Colyton, Devonshire, but was expelled in about 1635. At that point, he and some loyal members of his congregation came to Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony. But he turned out to be too liberal for his congregation, and sent him packing to a church in Hingham, where and got involved in politics. But he was sufficiently critical of Governor John Winthrop that Winthrop expelled him from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He moved next door to a congregation in Barnstable, in Plymouth Colony, but only lasted a couple of years there. His next congregation was in Yarmouth, and then out of Plymouth Colony altogether to what now York, Maine. When he was replaced there, he went back to England. After a decade in England, he was sent packing again, and returned to America, in Durham, New Hampshire. John was was a ship captain for most of his adult life, and transported many of the men for which his uncle Francis received land grants. Francis evidently paid for those trips, and that's what counted. I'm not sure whether John undertook transatlantic voyages, or just sailed among the mid-Atlantic states, so I can't say how far at sea he might have been when he was lost.

He came to Nansemond County, Virginia with his parents and uncles John and James Billingsley prior to 1649. Arrived in Calvert County, Maryland with his parents about 1652. He moved to Richmond County, Virginia with his parents about 1659. He and his brothers Francis and Edward were legatees to a "Cowe Calfe" each in the will of James Billingsley in 1663, who calls them "my three cozens (nephews) on the Rapehannock." They were also mentioned in the will of Susannah Billingsley, widow of James, in the same year.

Francis Billingsley was a Planter and a Quaker. He was given several land grants around Calvert County, totalling upwards of 2500 acres, for the transportation of men to Maryland on ships owned or captained by his brother John. Most of the parcels had names (I don't know whether the names predated the land grants, which included both the name and detailed metes-and-bounds descriptions.) Some of the properties are intact today.
