1. | William Arbuckle was born on 3 Mar 1752 in Balcony Falls, Rockbridge County, Virginia, USA (son of James Arbuckle, Sr and Margaret Thompson); died on 21 Mar 1836 in Mason County, West Virginia, USA; was buried in Craig-Douglas Cemetery, Grimms Landing, Mason County, West Virginia, USA. Other Events and Attributes:
- Occupation: Farmer
- Will: 21 Jan 1835, Mason County, West Virginia, USA
- Probate: 5 Sep 1836, Mason County, West Virginia, USA
Notes:
William Arbuckle was the third husband of Catherine Madison, who, when she married William, was 25 years old, twice widowed, and with two children. William and Catherine had 8 children together, and he lived to the age of 84 in Mason County (now in West Virginia), just a few miles from Point Pleasant.
------------------------------------------
William was at Fort Randolph in Point Pleasant for the famous Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774, but he later described himself as a "volunteer soldier". My guess is that he was given an assignment at the fort by his much older brother Capt Matthew Arbuckle. He is somtimes credited Matthew's military accomplishment, but there is no contemporary evidence that he served in the militia. In fact, his application for a Revolutionary War pension was denied for that very reason.
Will:
He left bequests to the four daughters who survived him and to several grandchildren. He left $1 to be shared by the seven or eight sons and daughters of his late daughter Jane McMullin "by way of Remembrance". He similarly left $1 to his daughters Margaret James, Catherine Craig, & Elizabeth Alexander, though he left his blacksmith tools and his shop property to Elizabeth's husband, Samuel. His daughter Mary Nelson and several grandsons received $100 notes that were due to him from Samuel Alexander. He also left a shotgun and a rifle to two grandsons.
His executors were his "friends" (and sons-in-law) John G Nelson and Sam'l Alexander.
Buried:
GRid=34837010; Very old stone; almost disintegrated. A new monument reads "ARTIFICER VA TROOPS REV WAR". An "artificer" is a craftsman who specializes in the construction of artillery or fortification systems.
William married Catherine Madison on 30 Oct 1779 in Botetourt County, Virginia, USA. Catherine (daughter of Humphrey Madison and Mary Dickinson) was born in 1754 in Augusta County, Virginia, USA; died on 18 Jul 1818 in Buffalo, Putnam County, West Virginia, USA; was buried in Craig-Douglas Cemetery, Grimms Landing, Mason County, West Virginia, USA.
