    As a young man, Thomas moved from his family home in Queens (where his great-grandfather Thomas Skillman established a farm in about 1665) to Somerset Co NJ, where he purchased 500 acres of farmland on the Millstone River, in what is now the community of Harlingen, within Montgomery Twp. His name lives on in the community of Skillman, NJ, which is still indentified on maps, and is just west of Harlingen (andl in Montgomery Twp). The community of Skillman was named for Thomas' great-grandson Joseph, who assisted in the construction of a railroad in the 1870', where where he lived is still identified on maps as Skillman, New Jersey. (It's officially an unicorporated Census Designated Place in Montgomery Twp, and is about 30 miles from Staten Island, and 7 miles from Princeton. (See its Wikipedia page☍). Thomas married Mary Beekman in Montgomery Twp in 1751. Mary's family had moved to Somerset Co from Brooklyn
