Associated primarily with Fort Smith, Arkansas and Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, which he established in the 1820s. He built roads and maintained peaceful relationships with local Indians as well as Indian who were relocated there. The Arbuckle Mountains of eastern Oklahoma are named after him.
