    He was a prominent theologian. Many of his sermons and writings have been compiled into a book that is readily available. Gravestone inscription: Beneath this monumental stone lies interred the body of the Revd. Moses Dickinson, late pastor of the first Church of Christ in Norwalk, who departed this life May 1, 1778, in the 83d year of his age, and 51st of his ministry in said Church. A man of good understanding, well informed by study, chearful in temper, prudent in conduct, he came to his grave in full age like as a shock of corn cometh in his season

    John Dickinson was a precocious fighting horseman who, in his early 20's, was named captain of a Virginia Militia company that was dubbed" Dickenson's Rangers" (misspelling 'DIckinson'. Fort Dickenson in central Virginia was named for him when he was still a young solider in command of the fort. He led a company in the Battle of Point Pleasant in what is now West Virginia in 1774.

    I spell his surname "Dickinson" (with an i) because He spelled it that way in his will, and because the historical markers for the fort named after him say "Fort Dickinson". But most Virginia records spell his (and his fathers) last name "Dickenson" (with an e), and his his Virginia Militia company is usually called "Dickenson's Rangers".
    I use his will's spelling as evidence that his father was the Adam Dickinson who was born in Massachusetts to Hezekiah Dickinson and Abigail Blakeman.
    But his children's names are generally spelled with an e, so that's how I spell them.
