This excerpt is from the chapter on "Detached Families", meaning people with the surname "Corliss" who cannot be traced back to George Carliss, who immigrated to Newbury, Plymouth Colony, in 1639, and who is at the root of the descendancy that forms the bulk of the book.

This excerpts sits in a list of people living in New Jersey, largely (I think) at the time of the book's publication. But I can find no connection from this descendancy to any of the other people in the list, nor indication that anyone in this descendancy was living in New Jersey at that time.

I have lightly edited the text to form two numbered lists - for the five generations of direct Fitzrandolph descendants, and for the eight children of Richard Fitzrandolph and Elizabeth Corlies.

  1. Edward Fitz Randolph, from Nottingham, England, born about 1615, settled at Scituate, Mass., in 1630. He married, May 10th, 1637, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Blossom, of Leyden, one of the forefathers, and removed to Barnstable, Plymouth Colony, in 1639.
  2. Among their ten children was Nathaniel, born at Barnstable, May 15th, 1642, who married Mary, daughter of Joseph Holley, of Dorchester, Mass., and removed to Piscataway, N. J.
  3. Among their eight children was Edward, born at Woodbridge, N. J., in 1678, who married, in 1704, Katharine, daughter of Richard Hartshorn.
  4. Among their ten children was Richard, born at Woodbridge, N. J.. 4 mo. 10, 1705, who married, at Shrewsbury, N. J., in 1735, Elizabeth Corlies. He was a "gentleman planter." He died at Perth Amboy, N. J., in 1754.
  5. They had eight children, as follows:
    1. Richard, d. young.
    2. Thomas, married Abigal Vail, and moved West.
    3. Richard, d. single.
    4. George, married Widow Mason, and moved to Georgia.
    5. Katharine, who married John Sherer, of Delaware.
She was the grandmother of the late Maj..Gen. Lorenzo Thomas, Adjt. Gen. U. S. Army.
    6. Elizabeth, d. single.
    7. Mary, 2 mo. 25, 1751, married Elisha Brown, of Wilmington, Del.
    8. Edward, b. at Perth Amboy, N. J., 2 mo. 20, 1754, married Anna Indiana Steel, daughter of Henry Steel, Esq., of Philadelphia, Pa. He was a captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War of 1776, and was in the battles of Trenton, Princeton. Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth, and was also at Valley Forge : was wounded at the massacre of Paoli ; d. Mar. 12, 1837 ; was the first one of the family who dropped the " Fitz " from his name, but his children retained the letter " F."

The Elizabeth Corlies above was, no doubt, a daughter of one of the sons of George Corlies, of Shrewsbury, N.J.
