Based on the Genealogy column of the Boston Transcript, 9 Mar 1931, perhaps by Drake Adams, in response to a note written by "E.K."
With links to the direct ancestors of Robin Richmond.

Francis Drake: 1615 Colchester, Essex, England- 1687 Picastaway, NJ

Mary Ann Walker: 1625 Hampden, Rockingham, NH - 1688, Piscataway, NJ

1141. ADAMS,DRAKE. E.K. Dec 31, 1930. Perhaps a brief synopsis of the early Drakes in New Jersey will be of assistance to E.K. Many years ago, perhaps as early as 1904 or as late as 1916, there were several article on the Drake family published in the genealogical columns of the Newark Evening News, signed "Gerer".There were also discussions over other signatures. The articles by "Gerer"; seem to be especially well done and refer to many original records. We have only clippings of these articles in our library and they are probably incomplete. In this brief note I shall draw on our Drake clippings, except where other references are mentioned.

Francis and Mary1

Francis Drake was a resident of New Hampshire as early as 1654 (see Pope's Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire), lived at Greenland and at Portsmouth, was called a yeoman, was ensign of the Portsmouth town company in 1666. He is believed to have been a relative of Robert of Exeter. In 1668 he and his wife Mary sold land at Greenland. This was probably the year that he removed from the Piscataqua region in new Hampshire to Piscataway, N.J. Many of his neighbors went to New Jersey at about the same time. Captain2 Francis Drake died at Piscataway Sept. 24, 1687, and his wife Mary died July 29, 1688. Only three children are positively known— George, Elizabeth, and John.

Notes by Robin Richmond

  1. Francis and Mary (Walker) Drake were my 9th Great Grandparents. The date and place of birth that I show for her are not fully sourced.
  2. "Captain" Francis Drake was not the famous Elizabethan adventurer and privateer, who was born in 1640. No relationship between the two has been established. Our Francis is sometimes called "Captain" not because of any relationship with the sea, but because he was a captain in the New Jersey militia.
  3. John Drake, my 8th Great Grandfather was the first minister of the First Baptist Church of Piscataway, and served there for 50 years, until his death in 1741. He and Rebecca Trotter had 15 children.
  4. Rebecca Trotter Drake, my 8th Great Grandmother, died at age 46 in 1702, leaving as many as 12 children under age 18.
  5. Sarah Drake and Benjamin Hull Jr (son of Benjamin Hull and Rachael York) are my 7th great grandparents. Elizabeth marks the end of my Drake ancestry. Their daughter, Anna Hull, married Christopher Skillman. Anna marks the end of my Hull ancestry.
