Personal reflections on Judge Levi Trewhitt

Written by John W Ramsey, an associate and friend of Judge Trewhitt
Quoted in the Chattanooga Times on June 24, 1934,
in a two-page article titled "Leaves from the Family Tree"
about Judge Trewhitt and his descendants.
Levi Trewhitt was about six feet in height, with a large, well-built frame and weighed about 180 pounds.  In declining years, he was a little stooped, but looked stout and had a large head covered with auburn hair, expressive countenance, and blue eyes.

His pleadings and other law papers were drafted with great care and skill. He as accurate and critical; careless and ship-shod attorneys dreaded to see him inspect their pleadings. Trewhitt carefully prepared a case for trial. His plan was to be ready, but not try until ready. If evidence was in existence, he found it, and then knew how to use it, but did not manufacture evidence. In drawing evidence for continuance he could make facts look wonderfully clear and important and their discovery appear recent and accidental, but few had the face to resist his showing. He had good clients and labored with might and main for their success. They had great faith in him. He was no office seeker never took an active part in politics, but devoted himself to the profession of law. He was appointed by the legislature one of the first commissioners of the city of Cleveland, and being the only lawyer on the commission, much of the work in making deeds to lots sold and directing the work on the new courthouse and jail was done by him.

At the beginning of the War Between the States, Mr Trewhitt was a strong Union man and used his influence for the Union. He was arrested and sent to Mobile, Ala, by the Confederate authorities, where he died.
